South Shields FC

After 18 months of working almost exclusively with the women's team at the club, I joined the men's media team in August 2024 to provide expanded coverage of the team during the 2024/25 Vanarama National League North season.

Match Report: South Shields 0-2 Spennymoor Town

Despite the scoreline, it was Shields who almost had the dream start - Paul Blackett surged through on goal within two minutes of the game and Will Jenkins narrowly missed the ball, as he slid to try and poke it through on goal inside the 18-yard box.It would be the visitors who would strike first, and to their credit it was an exquisite piece of play.Shields were left vulnerable as the Moors passed it around the box, before Rob Ramshaw fed McKeown, with space and time in the box, to slot it pas...

Match Report: Darlington 1-1 South Shields

Jack Maskell’s seventh minute opener was cancelled out by Will Jenkins’ leveller in the 36th minute to secure the draw.It is a result which leaves Elliott Dickman’s side in 17th place in the Vanarama National League North table, with just two games remaining of their 2024/25 campaign. Dillon Morse started the game, after a positive reception to returning from injury recently, and the long-serving defender was afforded the chance to put in a solid shift out there.Shields almost had the dream star...

Match Report: South Shields 0-0 Southport

South Shields were held to a scoreless draw against Southport in their penultimate home game of the season on Saturday. It was a game of few chances, but the outcome was a point which successfully halted Shields’ run of five consecutive defeats in the Vanarama National League North. That result means the Mariners find themselves in 16th place on 53 points, with just three games remaining. Manager Elliott Dickman handed the young James Sloan his second start, following an impressive shift last time...

Match Report: South Shields 0-1 Brackley Town

His 36th-minute goal proved to be the difference-maker, which kept the visitors’ title dreams well and alive, not least due to results elsewhere working in their favour.Shields will no doubt be left disappointed given they did well at times to create some chances, though the final outcome was that of a fifth successive loss in the Vanarama National League North.A more positive fact, meanwhile, was that Mackenzie Heaney returned to action following his leave of absence in recent weeks, and he was...

Match Report: Rushall Olympic 2-1 South Shields

An own goal brought Shields back into the game after Louis Hall had given the hosts the lead, though it wasn’t enough and Aaron Forde sent the home supporters home happy. Shields started off the game the brighter of the two sides, with the first chance falling to starting debutant Ewan McGowan, whose shot on goal was blocked out for a corner within 10 minutes.McGowan did excellently to send Paul Blackett through on goal just after, but Pics ‘keeper, Scott Moloney, pulled off a confident save to...

Match Report: South Shields 0-5 Kidderminster Harriers

Shields came into the game with confidence, off the back of a 2-0 win on the road against Peterborough Sports, but they were unable to replicate that performance this time around.Kidderminster were the stronger team from the off - their first chance came when an inswinging cross by Reece Devine found Hemmings waiting in the wings, but his header was saved by Seymour. They repeated the endeavour two minutes later, however, and got their rewards from a free-kick to give the visitors the lead. Shiel...

Match Report: Radcliffe 4-1 South Shields

The Mariners responded quickly to George Glendon’s opener through Paul Blackett, but they were quickly hurt by Tom Walker’s goal and couldn’t find an answer thereafter. Three goals were scored in the first 10 minutes, but things appeared to settle once that initial flurry of finishes had ended and Shields went into the break narrowly behind.A chance came squandering in the 13th minute when Will Jenkins, standing perilously near the 18-yard box, had his shot headed out for a corner. His effort ro...

Match Report: South Shields 0-1 Hereford

Yusifu Ceesay struck in the 70th minute to break the deadlock and pick up all three points, as the visitors left the North East successful in their pursuit of victory. Elliott Dickman will no doubt be disappointed by the manner in which the defeat unfolded, and it’s fair to say things didn’t get off to the best start for his side.Dillon Morse was taken off just four minutes into the game through injury and he was replaced by Will Jenkins, who made a decent contribution in his absence. ‘Keeper My...

Match Report: South Shields 1-1 Scarborough Athletic

The visitors had been leading for much of the match after Will Thornton got a touch following a corner in the 14th minute, but Shields kept fighting for an equaliser they richly deserved. Elliott Dickman’s side started off strongly, with the first chance falling to Crossley - Will Jenkins had reached Mackenzie Heaney who brought things forward before finding the forward. Shields then countered and they were arguably unfortunate not to take the lead from it, especially after Paul Blackett surged...

Match Report: South Shields 0-1 Darlington

His 30th minute opener was the only goal scored of the afternoon and the Mariners went away empty-handed in a result which saw them fall to 12th in the Vanarama National League North table.Shields’ first line-up of the year included a returning Dan Ward following a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering an injury earlier in the campaign. It was, all in all, a familiar team which should have brought some confidence into the game.Of course, the weather conditions didn’t make things easy but...

Match Report: Spennymoor Town 1-1 South Shields

Needless to say it was an upbeat occasion and Elliott Dickman’s side played it about, as fans have become used to in recent times, well. David Carson made his long-awaited second debut for Shields when he came off the bench in the 13th minute to replace the injured Will Jenkins.Despite a positive start, it would be the hosts who would take the lead through Fletcher, from the edge of the box in the 27th minute. It wouldn't take too long for Shields to equalise when Allan, formerly of Spennymoor a...

Match Report: South Shields 2-0 Marine

He tucked away a penalty in the 11th minute - following a challenge in the box by James Butler - before adeptly crafting the team’s second of the afternoon in the 25th minute when he capitalised on a poor goal kick on Marine’s part. That win pushed the Mariners up to eighth in the Vanarama National League North and they stand just two points outside the play-off spots as we approach the Christmas run-in.Something worth noting, also, is that Shields have the third best home record in the division...

Match Report: South Shields 7-0 Rushall Olympic

The match was turned within 10 minutes when Nathan Cameron was red-carded and Shields never looked back from that moment.Blackett scored his first of three goals from the spot following that challenge inside the box, before Martin Smith made it two with a wonderful lob from distance.found his second and third strikes of the game soon after, culminating in a performance which rightfully earned him the man of the match award.Others may have had their claim too, meanwhile, as Tom Allan netted twice...

Match Report: Brackley Town 1-0 South Shields

The Mariners wanted to bounce back after Tuesday’s narrow loss to Radcliffe, but they were forced to settle with nothing after George Carline’s 71st minute goal separated the two sides. New arrivals Joe Richards and Anton Dudik - loaned from Leeds United and Carlisle United respectively - were in from the off and they wanted to use their first outing to impress manager Elliott Dickman. To their credit, Shields started the game well - it took just eight minutes for the pair to create the team’s f...

Match Report: South Shields 0-1 Radcliffe

Josh Hancock converted the visitors’ 75th minute penalty to claim a 1-0 victory for the Boro, in what was their second consecutive win, being lifted off the bottom of the Vanarama National League North table in the process. Elliott Dickman’s side would be left to rue their missed opportunities as all focus turns towards this weekend’s long trip to face Brackley Town. Things weren’t made easier by the fact Tom Broadbent - who netted Shields’ winner on Saturday - had to come off part-way through t...

Match Report: South Shields 1-0 Leamington

Backed by a bumper crowd of in excess of 2,000 supporters, Tom Broadbent’s header separated the two sides, although some may argue it could and should have been more. Elliott Dickman handed Myles Boney a start in goal, after opting for the more youthful Kyle Seymour in recent outings, and he impressed although he wasn’t made to do much. His clean sheet was the first one since September 3rd, against Buxton in the Vanarama National League North, when Aidan Rutledge's first-half stoppage-time free-k...

Match Report: Southport 3-0 South Shields

South Shields were left frustrated as they went away empty-handed in a 3-0 defeat against Southport on Saturday.Elliott Dickman’s side were hoping to bounce back after last weekend’s loss against Needham Market but in spite of trying, they were unable to find the target out there. That isn’t to say Shields didn’t deserve to get something out of the game, as things might have presented themselves differently at full-time had some chances gone their way.The Mariners were bright in the opening spel...

Mariners knocked out of the Frank Pattison Challenge Cup

South Shields were knocked out of the Frank Pattison Challenge Cup on Monday night in a 1-0 defeat against a well-worked Gateshead outfit at 1st Cloud Arena.Lucas Lowery proved to be the difference-maker for the Heed as they advanced to the second round of the competition at the expense of the young Mariners team. His 53rd minute strike was the only goal scored that evening in an otherwise low-key affair.Dillon Morse started the game, offering some first-team representation out there, along with...

Match Report: Needham Market 3-0 South Shields

South Shields suffered a 3-0 defeat, in one of their longest trips of the season, against Needham Market on Saturday.A nightmarish first-half saw three goals conceded and a red card handed to Tom Broadbent, and Shields couldn’t find their way back into this Vanarama National League North match.Manager Elliott Dickman mainly persisted with the team which came back to draw 3-3 against Chorley a fortnight ago, in dramatic fashion.Dillon Morse made a welcome return to the fold after spending some ti...

South Shields FC host London City Lionesses ahead of Sunderland AFC match

They are the latest in a succession of teams to have trained at the Mariners' home ground - Roberto Mancini's Saudi Arabian national side, along with the Costa Rican men's team, trained there in September 2023. Sunderland AFC edged out a tight battle to claim a 1-0 victory, through a goal by Natasha Fenton in the 58th minute. The Pride, as they are known, were founded in 2019 when the board of directors and senior management at Millwall Lionesses decided to break away and form an independent enti...

Match Report: South Shields 3-3 Chorley

An attendance of just shy of 2,000 packed 1st Cloud Arena to witness a game that appeared to have it all, and it culminated in the 95th minute with Hodgson’s leveller. The Mariners had been trailing for much of the game - Kole Hall gave The Magpies the lead just 10 minutes in, and Momodou Touray compounded matters just six minutes later.Mackenzie Heaney wowed supporters with a powerful hit from range in the 51st minute, and Hodgson grabbed his first of the afternoon to level things in the 56th mi...

Match Report: Macclesfield 5-0 South Shields

The Mariners were second-best throughout and Robbie Savage’s men put in an outstanding shift to progress into the third qualifying round at their expense. Paul Dawson struck a lovely free-kick into the top corner in the 12th minute to give Macclesfield an advantage they would never surrender. He followed up in the 37th minute to give the hosts a commanding lead at the break, before goals after the interval by Tre Pemberton, Justin Johnson and Edy Maieco sealed things.Elliott Dickman named a stron...

Match Report: South Shields 3-0 Billingham Synthonia

A young Mariners team progressed to the first round of the ‘Frank Pattison’ Challenge Cup on Tuesday night with a 3-0 win over Billingham Synthonia at 1st Cloud Arena.Lewis Henry, Jonah Flewers and Frazer Barker all got on the scoresheet, in a performance they can rightly be proud of, up against Northern League opposition. It was a heavily rotated team, which featured the likes of Kyle Seymour in net and familiar first-team names such as Martin Smith and Ewan McGowan too. But this gave the young...

Match Report: Chester 1-0 South Shields

The forward won out in a scramble in the 18-yard box on the stroke of half-time, scoring the only goal of the afternoon. It was good to see Sam Hodgson out on the field once more, following his early recall from Morpeth Town, after spending only one month away from the club. Unfortunately, Matty Williams was stretchered off in the sixth minute for The Seals after suffering what looked to be a serious injury. Shields' first opportunity came when Mackenzie Heaney launched a teasing through ball ov...
